Emergency Eye Care in Edmonton: What You Need to Know
1. Get Immediate Care – Call Us First
If you’re experiencing an eye emergency, call your nearest office as soon as possible at by visiting our locations page. We set aside emergency appointment slots daily, but these fill up quickly. To ensure you receive timely care, don’t wait until the last minute.
2. Mostly Covered by Alberta Health Care
Most eye emergencies, such as infections, injuries, or sudden vision changes, are partially covered by Alberta Health Care. Your out-of-pocket expense for an emergency visit at our clinic is $25.
3. Faster Than the Emergency Room
Optometrists can often see you faster than a hospital ER. If your condition requires an ophthalmologist, we will contact the on-call specialist directly to arrange an appointment so you’re not stuck waiting for treatment.
4. Prescription Medications Available
Optometrists in Alberta are licensed to prescribe both topical and oral medications for eye conditions. Please inform us of any medications you’re taking and if you have allergies to medications like penicillin or sulfa.
5. What is NOT an Emergency?
If you broke your glasses or lost a contact lens, these are not considered emergencies under Alberta Health Care and regular exam fees apply. However, we understand the urgency and will do our best to accommodate you quickly.
6. Walk-In Policy
We do not accept walk-in emergency appointments within the last hour of the doctor’s schedule due to the extra testing that may be required. Please call ahead to secure your spot.
